Identifying Cranks


On their own, many of these are normal things that all researchers and scientists face at some point. However the more of them apply, the more likely it is somebody is a crank.


They have been working on the same problem for decades with little progress

Experts in their field ignore their work

They publish in alt-journals

They start their own journal

Their production quality is consistently low

They quote themselves

They don't have many peers who are respected in their field

Anyone successful in their field is “doing it wrong”

The successful people in their field are “just doing what they did years ago”

Nobody is quite sure how they make a living

They are the primary person promoting them
